Mandatory Group Classes
Where can kenpo students get together and
have fun while improving their skills and advancing their
abilities? Answer: Group classes!
Group classes are a must for all Nexus Kenpo
Academy students. Groups are a blast to participate in and
an invaluable method for students to improve their flexibility,
skills, reflexes, balance, co-ordination, stamina, endurance,
power and focus. Groups also enable students to more fully
see, feel and understand the how's and why's of the kenpo
techniques in ways that are not possible in private lessons.
In fact, groups are so important that they are required for
Belt Advancement.
Kenpo skills and flexibility do not develop
by themselves. Self-study at home, although essential for
drilling self-defense techniques, does not provide the kenpo
student with an environment to practice skills necessary to
advance further in their kenpo abilities. Stretching, and
repetition drills are the key to developing flexibility, and
efficient, powerful, kicks, strikes, blocks, parries and combinations.
The Confidence, Flexibility, Balance, Power, Speed and Co-ordination
that are hallmarks of Tracy's Kenpo fighters are created in
this way. This is also where the stamina and endurance to
fight multiple attackers or win trophies is developed (be
prepared to work hard and sweat!).
Groups also train kenpo students in the reality
of how and why the self-defense techniques work. Students,
in-group classes are given the opportunity, through "real
life" drills and scenarios, to work their techniques
against other students of varying rank, size and weight. This
is where students can really "feel" what it is like
to move with another live and moving person. How to expect
the unexpected. How to deal with the stress of surprise attacks
and multiple attackers and how the theory of angles, grounding,
stances etc. apply. Trial and error is the key here. Students
can safely learn from their mistakes in a supportive environment.
Here, students learn how it is possible to relax and have
a good time while honing their fighting skills.
Group classes often have a theme, such as self-defense, or
kick- boxing, or simultaneously fighting off multiple attackers.
Other groups offer expanded information, such as falling,
rolling, takedowns, and fighting from the ground. An introduction
to weapons, such as the Bo staff, Spear, and Butterfly Swords
is also introduced to kenpo students.
Group classes use specialized training, stretching
and repetition drills to develop kenpo students in body and
spirit. This is essential training to increase the students'
kenpo arsenal of kicks, strikes, parries and combinations.
Also, expanded understanding of the "how's and why's"
of real life applications of kenpo self-defense techniques
are also taught to give the student the necessary experience
needed to survive a real life threat in the street.
The discipline to attend group classes and the effort displayed
in class combined with patience and a willingness to learn
will result in the student developing and advancing in their
kenpo skills to a level beyond belief. All of this is achieved
in a group class environment that is safe, fun and infused
with a sense of comradery in the kenpo experience.
There is no denying that this training is
beneficial. There is no denying that group training can be
fun and exciting when used to supplement private lessons.
There is also no denying that this training is essential for
students to advance in their kenpo journey. Therefore, students
are required to attend a minimum of three (3) group classes
a month to be considered for advancement or to test for their
next belt rank. On average, between 8 and 10 groups are offered
a month. More will be added in the future.
So, check the schedule, make plans, and come
to group classes. Expect to meet other students, have fun,
learn new things, and develop skills. And with the right attitude
of determination, patience, and respect, we will all enjoy
this successful form of kenpo training.
